and on paper the victorious finish turning into a tragedy in an instant is good, I also liked the execution of that moment in a vacuum. But the dialogue and character writing mostly are pretty one-sided and bland, so the series worked for me more when it felt like an atmospheric slow-burn

This episode kind of reminds me of edgy Mahou Shoujou anime like Magical Girl Site, where they try to be subversive and clever by taking a cute and wholesome genre and making it dark and edgy. But just doing unexpected things and making something wholesome "dark" is not compelling in itself,

and when the execution falls flat you have something like this where it just feels like cheap shock value. The action was very good, however. I'm a bit disappointed that the opening shares some cuts with the actual series, but it was a much more impressive action showcase than episode 1.

Yea, Magical Girl Site is another series. It's one of the attempts to copy what Madoka did, it was just an example. We got a lot of edgy Mahou Shoujo after Madoka, it was very influential in that regard
