For the last week, @kenbensinger.bsky.social and I have been in Altadena, to report on the devastation. But we kept coming back to an Arco gas station, which a group of locals have turned into a beacon of hope with tacos, clothes and community. This is their story: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/15/us/tacos-water-and-homies-a-gas-station-becomes-a-uniquely-la-relief-site.html?unlocked_article_code=1.pk4.VFBL.ecyatES-asuK&smid=url-share

The plan is thought through. We just need CA voters to mobilize around it.
Now that we’re facing a malicious incoming president…. we absolutely need to make a break for it!

Do you know of any drop off places near Murrieta?
People in northern San Diego county are working to free up homes that LA residents can use for a few months. We really want to help.

Well that’s awfully awkward for the non-black and Latino people who have lived and worked in Altadena for decades. 😬
But, I guess that doesn’t count as being “real” 🙄

The folks at the Arco used the word "real" to contrast themselves with the newer folks and businesses who have moved into the neighborhood, i.e. eating tacos from a street vendor than at the new Homestate.
