Probably questionable whether there should be any bylines. In a dictatorship (like the US), the dictator will punish any reporter who reports stories the dictatorship doesn't want to be reported. Eliminating bylines makes it much harder for the dictator to carry out the punishment.

A lot of the best reporting comes from collaboration. I've been a fourth or fifth byline on stories and I've been happy to contribute. Now imagine working in an environment where as the fourth reporter on a story, you know you won't be credited for that work. What incentive is that?
