on a vastly more institutional side of things: the united states banned chinese women from immigrating by labeling them all prostitutes. really they just didn't want chinese families and chinese population growth

Not so fun fact: Jack the ripper was believed to kill only prostitutes or the like, however now its believed they were just poor woman given that title just for being poor, so yes you are correct.
