How horror are these books? Or in particular Slewfoot and Between Two Fires. Are they just full of gory descriptions and stuff? I never read any horror books, so I can‘t say what I am interested/fine to read in this regard, but medieval horror sounds intriguing depending on how it is written.

idk how much is "too much gory" for you but I'd say they do not particularly focus on gore any of this books.

but I'd recommend to check out Slewfoot, it's less "intense" and has beautiful illustrations

Great, that was the one I was looking to buy first anyway! Between Two Fires is, for whatever reason, not available in any form or way to order from my local bookstore. I normally read paperbacks, but now that you mention illustrations, is it better to get the hardcover version because of them?

I think unfortunately you can now only buy the shitty amazon version of Between Two Fires...

Yeah Amazon is the only place where I found it, though it has the cover you posted for paperback. The only other version they have is a hardcover for over 300€ …

I know I think it's because it's out of print the original, personally I'd recommend downloading the ebook because I have the Amazon version and it's really poorly edited...

not medieval, but Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann is a fictional story set in the 30 years war and it‘s pretty horrific as well as intriguing. some medieval witchcraft in it too

Hollow by Brian Catling is a dark fantasy novel that has some pretty spooky and evocative moods! You could also check out As Meat Loves Salt. It's not a fantasy novel, but there's some pretty horrific things that happen that disturbed me in a way horror novels do.

The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw is a pretty good short story that fits this criteria. Its a bit heavy on the fantasy side but still takes place in a medieval-adjacent setting

Hurled Headlong Flaming by Matt Holder nicely blends Milton with black metal, philosophy with swords and sorcery. It's also a much more thoughtful treatment of the Crusades than what we typically get in medieval fic.
