I wonder how much of that 40% feel like they've failed, when they absolutely haven't because a vast majority of career advice is still coming from academics that "made it".

The whole thing is absurd. Of course lots of people don't get permanent jobs in academia. Academia is set up to ruthlessly ration permanent jobs, while using temporary labour for most of its core business. Has been for decades.
I did a study for Stanford for grad student career advice. Only 25% can ever hope for a career in academia. 75% need to find jobs in industry, law, etc. The NIH was requiring Stanford to inform and help grad students and did not want to pay for them to hang out in school for academia jobs for years.
I am one of the 40%- though I still dabble! I’m very happy to be honest. The needless competition and harrowing burnout (observed in others) for increasingly meagre research time did that maths for me.
