My understanding of presidential pardons is that they were traditionally granted at the end of a president's term. Trump, on the other hand, seems to be issuing them for his allies as soon as convictions happen. I know we all expect this sort of corruption, but is there precedent for such an effort?

It’s not that Trump is actually showing loyalty to his followers, he just understands this will further embolden them to take more serious action on his behalf.
Presidential pardon power may need to end with Trump.
Trump is just showing that transparently.
Also, POTUS could order goons to block congress from convening to impeach him, then pardon the goons.
Those sorts of pardons are gone.
