I feel like it’s not stressed enough the degree to which our current national political moment was shaped by catastrophically bad economic policy choices 40 years ago.

Reagan - “the seven scariest words in the English language are I am from the government, and I’m here to help.” Who cares about destroying the gov when it’s your enemy? Until they personally need help, of course.
A set of very clear options articulated as present communal sacrifice or punting all the suffering decades down the road. One guess which option was overwhelmingly selected 😩

And other than a few desperately hopeful but ultimately crushingly disappointing months in 2009, no electoral mandate clear enough to reverse course on anything.
