It being the anniversary of Joe Strummer's death, I have a government-sanctioned excuse to tell people to watch Mystery Train tonight. A perfect movie that feels almost miraculous. I have no idea how it turned out as good as it did.

I met Joe and a few of the bandmates in Managua in 1988. he was filming Walker. I was on holiday when the sandanista's were actually the people. Viva Sandino!
Carl Perkins. No, Elvis. No, Carl Perkins! But Elvis is the King! Great, great movie in which a small slice of Memphis also plays a starring role. “It’s (the port city of) Yokohama, with 60% of the buildings removed.”
I saw this movie, as an afternoon matinee, when it was first screened. The only other people in the theatre were pensioners. I had laughed so heartily throughout the screening that an elderly man tapped me on the shoulder as I left & said, “My dear, you really enjoyed that, didn’t you?”
