Even those, like Trump and Musk, who lie for gain benefit enormously from this because the success of their lies depend on a widespread belief in veracity.

As a society we've struggled for decades with trying to contain the propensity of business to lie through marketing, labelling and PR.

We could just about contain this onslaught of falsity with proper regulation and a commitment to truth in other areas of society.

If we cannot agree on what is and isn't true - or even on the value of truth - we can no longer live together in peace and prosperity.
