I don't care. I don't think normal people should care either. If you make a living off social media engagement, I get it, or if you're studying large-scale usage trends, sure, but otherwise... I don't think it should matter.

Think of it this way: if you were keeping a journal and you found out that the particular method of journaling you used was only preferred by 3% of people who journaled, would you care?

If you were hosting a game night and found out the game your friends like to play is unpopular, would you care?

A lot of our tolerance for cruelty and exploitation in advanced capitalism is justified by the collective fantasy that someday, somehow I might be a member of the ultra-rich, and therefore I appreciate the things they have and tolerate their extravagance, because I want it all too.

Social media operates on a similar premise. We tolerate the weird spectacle of influencers and each play the influencer game, trying to write "good posts", constructing some sort of "brand", etc., largely based on the idea that "somehow someday I might make it big."

And it feels good when you "make it". The attention feels great, for a minute at least. And it feels bad when you don't "make it", because somehow, like the numbers on your paycheck, you engagement stats feel like an implicit measure of your social worth as a person.

So what I'd like to suggest—setting aside the large-scale socio-political questions of whether it matters that this platform survives or that one does, and which is socially dominant—is that we just shouldn't care.
