if there’s anything obvious in this moment about democratic politics in the US, it’s that the center left has utterly failed as a bulwark against the extreme right, and there is nowhere to go but the progressive left.

I suggest you go independent with anyone who commits to reform(get rid of) the electoral college, the corruption in party politics, the judiciary and the media. For a side course you want DEI codified into law, right to choose for all and best of all tax the billionaires back to millionaires
Is there a center left? Since the Clintons helped form the DLC in 1985 between Reagan's two disastrous tax cuts, the wage and wealth gaps have steadily widened. Even today, I hear huzzahs for Hillary and her Democratic minions, Pelosi, Schumer, and the rest of the treacherous 'center left.'
The US has never had a strong enough base for a progressive left. Historically, with its opposition to socialism and communism, any politician veering too far left from center automatically gets a scarlet letter. But people are also conditioned to believe that progressive values are inherently bad.
The biggest pushes for progressive reform have followed big disasters, like WWII or the Great Depression, unfortunately. So, perhaps, Trump is ushering the next big disaster to create the conditions for the biggest progressive push on this country! 🥲
Just to quibble: The worker rights movement didn't really grow out of a national disaster (though it was fueled by highly publicized local ones), the TR progressive wave wasn't after a major disaster, nor was the Great Society.
Fair point, indeed. Interesting that worker conditions keep deteriorating, yet no strong enough movement coalesces nowadays. Is internet-fueled alienation partially to blame? Regardless, it still makes me think that things have to get dire across the board for such a big movement to rise now…
Look the reality is the “center left” you speak of is actually further over to the center right if you look at it through a worldwide democratic lens. The USA progressive left is closer to the regular “left” of the majority of world democracies.

the ironic thing is you could get people to line up behind progressive policies if they were dressed up in nationalist clothes.
But we can hope!
Corp Dems are slow walking doing do nothing to stop Republicans.
