I'm not sure I understand - the Sox didn't get either of those guys. Their angle really should be Braves-esque and give long term deals to the guys they love in the pipeline (Anthony and Campbell specifically, Mayer is iffy given his health record)

Right but from reports they offered both very large long term deals. They didn’t get either player in the end but doesn’t mean they weren’t willing to give both mega deals. I think where the team has failed is knowing when to get uncomfortable with a guy they cover. Too disciplined I’d say
This is spot on. Too disciplined has been their Achilles heel since Dombrowski left. That and it seems that they are always assuming a great deal is going to be there to be had at the end of free agency.
That's charitable to ownership, they clearly weren't going to the numbers they'd need to in order to land those guys. So *are* they willing? If something costs $100 and you're willing to pay $70 for it, I don't know if you're really willing to buy it...
