Also delighted for this conversation. In The Gutenberg Parenthesis (credit Tom Pettitt et al) I theorize we return to un-(or less-)mediated public discourse.
The right knew how to exploit that; the left is stuck with mass-media logic; mass media are flummoxed & failing (see: #BrokenTimes).

A German reporter asked me whether Donald Trump needs mass media anymore. I said no. He exploited it as far as it would go; he planted its seeds of self-destruction; he now has his own "media" while the left is left with media that still think they can and should be mass.

In a way this can well be true. On the other hand, he does get all the attention of the mass media that amplify whatever corny things he seemingly randomly pushes out in the public on social media. .
