It’s always struck me how much two of the worst ecocides in Ireland seem to be called the same thing - Sitka spruce & Sika deer. One thing that is underestimated, as well, is the psychological impact of Sitka dead zones in the countryside.

Interesting coincidence - which got me looking it up. Seems that Sika is derived from the Japanese for deer. Sitka is in Alaska

I saw a sitka spruce plantation that was damaged by fire.

Where the fire was intense enough to kill the trees, broadleaf trees thrived in the shelter of the surviving sitka.

Birds, insects and mammals quickly returned.

Fire is not the solution, but maybe cutting clearings is.

It's a tricky trouble here in the states too. No one wants personal backups for power and heat, regulations are set up to make them unaffordable for most anyway but then no one is tending how to keep the power going due catastrophic issues on the city/county level. And we need trees.
