Such a great machine and one of the few points in history when Apple were genuinely faster than the competition. Mine has 32GB of RAM and was used to build C++ engine code way faster than on windows. SO SO SO quiet as well. macOS Leopard was bloat free as well. Cost me a fortune!

I worked in an Apple Store when these were a thing. They were an absolute beast with a price to match. One day we were bored on the shop floor so we experimentally tricked one out (virtually speaking) with all the "top" options and it came out to over ten thousand pounds.

I have a couple of 3.2GHz Xeon CPUs making their way to me and have already upgraded the GPU to a GTX 680, but it's the RAM that's supposedly the biggest issue. It already has 20GB - an insane amount for a 2008 machine - but I must admit the temptation is there to max it out 😈

I got hold of a G4 Tower years ago off ebay for a grand total of 99p! (I don't think the seller was very happy!) anyhow I replaced the graphics card intending to use it as a MorphOS machine but it's been forgot about upstairs ever since oops!

Very different inside to the Mac Pro 3,2 from a year later.

The 3,2 has all the CPU and memory on a slide-out board in the base of the system, which can be exchanged with different versions with differing configurations, such as single and dual processors etc. The motherboard purely handles the I/O

We used these as official Xbox360 dev kits before the proper ones were shipped. Seems crazy Microsoft supplying us dozens of these Macs to develop a game… funded and published by … Microsoft.
