I mean American weight lifting has its own gross culture. As does the even worse cross fit, which is truly more of a cult, replete with gross cultish nonsense everywhere one looks.

I mean Jiu Jitsu’s personal benefits are still enormous for many people, I’ll always tout them. The internet and BJJ’s collision with MMA culture has made the sport a lot less bearable as it pursues mainstream credibility, imo.

I’m not debating the first part. I even **like** the idea of cross fit as, given it’s essentially competitive working out, it allows for all body types, as opposed to football or basketball which select for physical features in a gross way.

But BJJ/MMA have a truly gross, unwelcoming culture and right wing bent. And they’re definitely cult like.

And cross fit is so overwhelmingly heteronormative and white it’s gross as well.

Cross fit? No, as a gay man I can tell you that cross fit and anything jiujitsu is very much unwelcoming. There are pockets that may be accepting, but overall? Very much hostile.
