We read that in 5th grade. It stayed with me because I have never built a fire under a tree in the 60 years since.

I have "To Build a Fire" on my short list of Best Science Fiction Short Stories (since it's about using technology to survive in an environment where humans have no business being), filed with the thematically similar "The Cold Equations" by Tom Godwin and "A Pail of Air" by Fritz Leiber.

I love your putting it in that category! It does have the same feel of space adventures where you are relying on the things you are trained and equipped to do work the way they have always worked before, and then suddenly they don't. It feels malevolent even though it's just nature doing its thing.
