It’s a beautiful plant but be aware if you have pets. It’s poisonous to dogs and cats. Side note: it’s the plant used to make Digitalis commonly known as Digoxin a common cardiac medication.
Great point and information! I definitely keep my dogs away from them. You know something is toxic around here if the large deer population won’t touch them. I’ve seen them eat all kinds of “deer resistant” plants, but they won’t touch foxgloves or daffodils.
I’ve always loved foxgloves but I’ve been rethinking my entire approach to gardening and am going only with local natives in the future (foxgloves not on the table)
That’s very admirable! We live on five acres and I do my best to keep the majority of it native. My fenced in garden is my sanctuary and I grow many non-native annuals and vegetables in there. As much as I’d like to say I’ll go all native someday, I just love my flowers too much to give them up.
I’m not all the way there yet by any stretch! And I do love my flowers. But I live on a small suburban lot surrounded by people with concrete and fake grass so I’m working on making my small patch environmentally friendly. Sounds like you have room to do all kinds of fun stuff
I had such trouble growing them in a home in the Midwest due to black walnut trees. Now they're everywhere at my SE PA home, because I don't have those trees and I couldn't be happier. 🌱
I’ve heard the black walnut trees are brutal. Never really dealt with them myself. I love having the foxgloves around. They were already on our property before we purchased it. It’s nice to have a flower around that the deer won’t eat.
There were 8 black walnuts on the property and they had been there awhile. They release a toxin. Some plants can handle it. You just have to figure out which. Ferns and hostas are fine. I did plant a hydrangea and it disappeared the next day, as if I hadn't planted it. 😱
On the plus side of the trees, I had no trouble with squirrels as they had a constant supply of food. Now I can't get rid of them...they eat my plants! And, Daisy won't chase them. It's always something. lol!
Yeah it was. I came home from work the day after planting it, looked out the window and it was gone. I went outside to check the spot and there was no trace of it. So weird!
Foxgloves are great. I brought wild seeds from Provincetown, MA to Seattle, WA and planted them in a garden I was hired to take care of on the 6th floor garden of a 18 story apartment building. (35ft trees in 4 ft containers on the edge of the building wall.) ?crazy?people?
I have Foxglove and (well monitored) dogs. My dogs sniffed it once, walked away, and they have not been interested in it since. Most dogs can sense what isn't good for them.
