First, you have to know what people have been told and what they believe. I always opened our discussions by asking her where she heard something or why she believed something. I would always calmly say something was incorrect or not factual when that was the case.

Then I would ask, but why would someone lie to you about that? Think why they would lie. We would discuss possible motivations for it being a lie. Usually, someone is going to profit. Tracing the line between the lie and how it benefited rich billionaires to lie was usually successful.

The next thing I did was speak frankly about the things I was afraid of. I told her outright I was afraid to die. She responded with shock, asking why I thought I might die, and I would bring up women who have died due to complete abortion restrictions, friends on SSDI who will die if it is cut.

Next I started trying to inject reality into her bubble. She is extremely religious and only watched Daystar/700 Club. After months of speaking on this issue, I convinced her to turn on PBS Newshour for one hour every night to get factual news. "It's funded by the people." She agreed.

It was on PBS Newshour that she saw video of Trump shaking hands with Putin. I had also continued to send her text messages, small snippets of news I thought she might not have heard. One of these texts was about Trump's smear of Zelensky.

The evidence of her own eyes + what I had been telling her since the inauguration lined up finally in her mind. She also happened to be at the VA that day, speaking to her nurse who told her about the firings at the VA. She called me, in distress. "Why didn't I see it before?"
