Older, harder bedrock with fewer faults to absorb the shaking makes the rumbling travel further. Plus, the quake was freakishly shallow.

how can they tell where the epicenter is and how deep it is? i’m quite curious. maybe discuss on today’s show? thanks!

Triangulation. We know the speeds quakes travel through rock, so depending on what time the various seismic stations feel it can give us an idea of where and how deep the quake was. The more stations reporting, the more accurate the results!
