There's Monte Cristo and Romeo and Juliet adaptations that are pretty good, though ironically wrt former the giant robots are the only part of it that suck
The wild thing about Gankutsuou is that it was intended to be an adaptation of The Stars My Destination, itself a Monte Cristo in space, but they couldn't get the rights, so said fuck it, and just did a direct adaptation of Monte Cristo set in space.
Yep! I think that worked in its favor a lot, both in not being a direct adaptation of The Stars My Destination + jamming what Maeda liked about The Stars My Destination into Monte Cristo.
Yes. It improves on the book too in showing us the world through Albert's eyes, making the Count out to be this weird slasher villain like figure that suddenly hits their social circle and it is perfect
Huge agree! I really love what it does with the ending and just the overall setting. I feel like Maeda also really understood that the novel is a kind of delightfully trashy soap opera of a read.
And you see how Albert is put in the same situation as the count -- to lose everything out of no fault of his own -- and he still refuses to bow down to hatred
Anime started to fall off the moment people thought evangelion what's the only mecha show capable of being that because of much non-standard elements of the genre it has. But in reality pretty much 90% of mecha anime is that good. that's the standard quality level
youre right, but im talking about literal adaptations of classic literature with giant robots added into them, like Gankutsuo being The Count of Monte Cristo
