Isn’t Prophecy quite early doors in the scheme of things? I’m hoping it will have a bit of exposition as it progresses, because even after watching the films and reading the books, I’ll probably be none the wiser.
A major theme in dune is that religion is just a tool for controlling the masses. Another is the statement that a messiah is the worst thing that can happen to a society. Dune is absolutely not pro-religion.
Not short but read Dune and Dune Messiah at least and you’ll have a picture of Herbert’s views on these subjects. Dune Messiah is basically one long “no this is a BAD thing” regarding Paul’s rise to power. Dune itself explores religion as a way to exploit cultures, search “missionaria protectiva”
