I agree, Vimy Ridge was an Outlier in that war though. Currie in particular hated wasting lives on pointless charges. Haig on the other hand was much more detached and his decisions led to a large loss of manpower due to a combination of outdated military tactics and not appreciating

The destructive power of new technology such as the machine gun. The innovation of the rolling barrage was a key part of the victory at Vimy. The only true downside is due to the damage in no mans land from the shelling the infantry Goulding logistically push their advantage as supply

Like I said, my grandfather made me intimately aware of where he served. My father as well in WW2 and the Korean Conflict.

Both sides had machineguns, and in WW1 and 2, machineguns hadn't achieved semi indirect fire use yet. That's called the Beaten zone, just like it is for artillery. It was the trenches themselves that made WW1 a meat grinder. The MG was still coming into it's full role in the Vietnam war.

Haig didn't mind using Canadian forces as assault troops. There's a little more nuance to this. Canadians we're the shock troops of both World Wars.'

They even laid out a convention in Geneva, over Canadian barbarism to German forces.
