Community housing has been an excellent source of housing for women moving from refuges. They continue to receive support which often is sadly lacking and safety compromised in the Government housing. However I do agree we need more public housing

I’m going on my experience a number of years ago as we moved women from refugees into community housing where they could stay up to two years whilst sorting out more permanent accommodation. I’m not sure what you mean

Thanks for sharing your story! I'm glad you got access to housing. I wish people in your situation were offered public housing as unlike social housing public housing never has a limited lease. This would be possible if social housing providers were not taking away from public housing stock.

Women are staying in refuges far longer than usual because of the shortage of public/community housing. Other vulnerable women are staying in abusive situations when they are otherwise ready to leave, because they can't get into a refuge. This is a failure of government, not the market.

Yes I worked for a couple of years in a refuge housing 26 families. Very large and I can only imagine how difficult it must be now to help women find housing because it was difficult enough then. Yes there has been a huge decline in building public housing and others disgustingly sold off

I’m convinced that a public builder guaranteed to build quality housing and not go insolve with government inspectors would sell out 3+ years of build work overnight.

If the government provided certainty, people would throw their money at it. At the moment it’s will they build garbage, fold or both

it's good to have a private market too, they don't have to compete. people should be allowed to build housing for people who want it in exchange for some money.

We need to do that, because the market won’t meet all needs, but the market is needed too - public also won’t meet all needs!

Doesn’t need subsidies though, just letting more houses be built will help - and helps with public housing too.

I am forever shocked at how many single family units are around Mebourne tbh. The government should buy them from the owners at market rate and develop some of these single-story Melbourne terraces into apartment buildings. NICE ones that people WANT to live in!!!! Not cheap crappy shoeboxes pls!

Where it seemed to work pretty well

Now corporations run our immigration program via neolibs in Gov & it is impoverishing renters, making people homeless & destroying koala habitat
