I was just having this same convo this morning when I heard that he was ill; he's been pushing back against fascism which is something not all popes have done.

I only know the broad strokes of religious history, but surely the Jesuits should have separated from Catholicism by now?

The church I attend now (the UCC) isn’t very hierarchical as it’s a congregational church, but the President is a Black woman with a doctorate who was formerly a Minister for Racial Justice, so I understand that church leaders can be a bit more progressive than the Pope

He lives the “hate the sin, love the sinner” policy (the stories of his personal relationships with trans sex workers in Italy are super cute, they make him food from Argentina and he funded covid relief for them)

but also I don’t think queerness or sex work is sinning, so, still not for me

Yeah, I’m a cradle Catholic who is still Catholic at heart but I joined the Presbyterian church because…well, women, LGBTQ+, reproductive rights, you name it. But I’m still praying for Pope Francis, not least because his successor could move the Church rightward.

Honestly I feel like I hear about Jesus more here than quite a few of the churches I’ve attended. Although pastor’s been on an anti-capitalism and anti-empire kick lately so Jesus is a good fit for those themes!
