I've encountered a lot of really smart conservatives working not just in foreign policy and defense, but also economics, political theory, and (especially) law. But on the whole, they either shy away from Trumpism or openly reject it.

The people that are left are mostly the grifters and ideologues.
The thing is, there is a mature, considered and rigorous right-leaning defense/foreign policy establishment, in both 'primacist' (neo-neo-con) and 'restrainer' flavors.

And those folks, so far as I can tell, respect Pete Hegseth functionally not at all.
