I think where a lot of people bounce off of David Lynch is that they see surreal, nonsensical imagery and assume that it must be symbolism. But that's not how Lynch worked at all. His work was not intellectual but visceral.

When you try to intellectualize David Lynch, line up the symbols to find the "meaning", you find nothing. Frustrating. Perhaps you write it off as shallow. But, the horse in the living room meant nothing more or less than the feeling you get seeing a horse in a living room. So just watch and feel.
