I will die on the hill that Americans are correct about the ground floor being the first floor. It's the first floor you are on, why would the first floor require you walking up a set of stairs?

You don't start counting years from 1, either. The moment of your birth is 0. The floor you're on is 0. When you age, you are 1. When you walk up the stairs, you're on floor 1.
Maybe it makes so much sense to me because in Polish we have a whole other word for the ground floor. Like, it's not just floor + modifier like in English, but a fully separate word. Parter = ground floor. PiΔtro = floor, but it has to be above ground.
