Agreed. We are in a huge renaissance of comological discovery and knowledge. I must say, that much praise must go to the technicians that interpret the data into the colors in the images. Without their technical and artistic skills we would be less awestruck.

The images are beautiful, but the captions don't give details of why Webb's image is different from Hubble's. I'm presuming that the Webb portion of the images is false color, but what part of the EM spectrum does it represent?

After watching a YouTube by @drbecky.bsky.social, I have changed my opinion on these images. She pointed out that sometimes the structures of galaxies in different EM spectral ranges can look quite different. That's what these images demonstrate. Hubble = visible light; Webb = infrared.

Pretty sure (not 100%, though) that it's visible and infrared. For complicated physics reasons, IR is able to go through dust clouds, which is why the galaxies look much more transparent than in visible light.

End result either way is that it looks awesome!

My daughter, @derylong.bsky.social is a PhD candidate at UVA… she uses this tech to generate models of the atmospheres of exoplanets. Amazing what you can see using different wavelengths of light. My understanding is basic but it’s really exciting.
