I think many US natives take the quality of the institutions for granted. If you were born after WWII, you haven't seen how fucked up it can get unless you follow closely the events unfolding in other countries.

For instance, the existence of NATO and its expansion to include many former Soviet satellites reflects the member nations' gratitude for being independent sovereign states. Estonia, for instance, is a cool country that's WAY better off than it was as an SSR.
