I love having my players roll for information, but there is no fail state.
You always get what your character would know, no matter what you roll. (I.E. what I need you to know for the story)
But for good rolls, I'll award you questions about the topic to reflect extra things you know. #TTRPG

Better advice: If you gate essential info behind a skill check, they still get it. The check is to avoid consequences for getting the info.
