again going to my bench of favorite complaints: it is weird how openly predatory US culture is and it would be good to have a government that feels some semblance of responsibility for people's wellbeing

This is one of those ideals vs reality on the ground situations...

Ideally there's mutual benefit to the cooperation and transactions.. The reality is folks trying their best to eke out the maximum benefit for themselves to the detriment of others, even if they have to interact again later.

our constitution legally prohibited the federal government from curtailing slavery for decades. to this day, it perpetuates similar exploitation through prison labor.

corporations can get away with absurd treatment of workers and consumers through the convenient fiction of long, unread contracts.

businesses can refuse to serve lgbtq+ customers because of “religious liberty.”

employers and conservative politicians can bust unions through “right to work” laws.

all the way down, our legal structures facilitate exploitation to sap working people’s wealth and dignity.

That’s not quite true- for years the US government gave away land, and that it seemed to me was the basis of the America dream; encouraging white people to prosper. Same after the 2nd world war. The US has had many protectionist policies, just not so many now.

i don’t at all disagree that capital has historically re-invested some profits in buying off white workers to divide the working class. i still believe that capital exploited, and exploits, the working class as a whole. i don’t think these ideas are mutually exclusive

It wasn’t capitalism that bought off white workers it was the political structure and those political structures could in fact be used to support poorer workers today and it wouldn’t go against anything inherently America. And yep capitalism exploits workers

No at all. The biggest socialist government ever all wrapped up in the propaganda that as the American dream. Such a shame your Government doesn’t continue to do that and starve off the next depression and facilitate more growth
