If you read any books from the 1800s-early 1900s, when they write about a family they often refer to something along the lines of ‘they have 4 surviving children’. Having children die was common.

Can't say it better. I want to remind people that those of us who grew up in the 50's and 60's remember kids/classmates who were crippled in some way by polio. Vaccines have saved millions of children and adults over the last 100 years.

This galls me. I spent half my career in public health. When the first cases of diphtheria go undiagnosed until it's too late (U.S. physicians have never seen a LIVE case), parents will sing a different tune. Seeing your child choke and then suffocate to death will do the trick. NB: Russia 1990-97.
