We have a similar term in the UK - “coarse fish” which refers to freshwater non-salmonids. It’s sort of born out of the 19th century class system here though.
i.e., fly fishing for salmonids was the pursuit of the wealthy who had access to the best water
I remember my grandad telling me everyone used to just kill Pike they landed accidentally whilst match fishing for Roach, as they were considered a nuisance predator.
