Searching UPA style should help find reference, and you can look at work from Craig McCraken And Genndy Tartakovsky. I love the style and have been trying to emulate it for years. You want very exaggerated features, either thick or very thin outlines, very little detail, and simple backgrounds

I'd definitely recommend Stephen Silver resources, from his book "The Silverway" to his workshops. They really focus on stylisation and the style has some midcentury inspiration.

Tom Oreb is a good reference point, he led the Disney efforts in that style along with Mary Blair. Also a good few of the Provensen's children book work. For more contemporary era: Paul Rudish & Lauren Faust were key designers for Dexter's lab so tracking their work is a good starting point there.
