Every time they do this for reading week it proves they CAN run trains all the way to Kitchener on weekends, they just choose not to.

Honestly not sure — I think it’s only special occasions. This one is for reading week, presumably because they know the buses won’t be able to handle the volume

Because GO Trains have to cross over two tracks of CN’s mainline around Toronto (CN Halton and CN York subdivisions). I believe CN won’t let GO do that with out a grade separation (which needs to be built, hence the long wait for two-way all day service).

That may be an explanation for overall lower service levels but not for the lack of weekend service though

Yeah, I can’t see why there can’t be 3-4 weekend round trips to augment the crowded 30 bus.

It would also give Guelph a much faster weekend service to Downtown Toronto; it’s ridiculous there’s no express bus to Bramalea on weekends.

Well there’s also not weekend service to Hamilton GO Centre, Milton, and Richmond Hill which have similar constraints.

Yes but GO uses CN track between Georgetown and Bramalea which is the choke point for service to Kitchener.

CN sets the restrictions and limitations on GO Transit’s use and access to their lines based on their internal needs as a private company. Same thing with VIA Rail operating on CN.
GO is investing in track and GO infrastructure with CN to allow more GO service but that takes lots of time and money.

Incredibly frustrating. I heard some works to allow for two-way all-day service to Kitchener were completed in 2024, but more work remains.
