If 546,651 registered voters by July 22, Californians will see the question: "Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?" on the 2028 ballot.

That would have devastating financial impacts to California & everyone would need a passport to leave if the US would even allow Californians to travel. It hurt England greatly when they left the EU. It’s a scam. Don’t fall for it. Not to mention it could lead to war.
It's all fun and games, but if CA could secede, it would no longer have to pay US federal taxes. That's a savings of $100 billion. We'd be free from ICE and the FBI. We could run budget deficits if we wanted.
If this initiative makes it onto the 2028 ballot and passes, it would only create a commission to assess the pros and cons of independence. But it could also send an importante message...
It would be an interesting fight in court if US govt was left holding a massive deficit after Cali decided to keep their money-taxes- instead of helping those struggling and poor red states bc @gopcrimes.bsky.social squandered the tax money given by CA to their poor state.
What happens when the tyrant starts turning the military against its citizens? It’s way beyond taxation without representation. How do we survive ? As a Californian with two high support autistic children - how does my family survive the violence and chaos that is surely coming?
No empire lets territory go without a fight. Washington would go to war with California before they'd allow a peaceful Calexit. This is how empires behave. Study history and geopolitics, stop running on vibes and let go of the idea that America is somehow different.
Do you really, in good faith, think that it's in anyway comparable? The Czech/Slovak split was just that, a split, not a smaller part breaking away from a massive militarised empire. For a more pertinent example that took place in the same part of the world look at the Prague Spring of 1968.
Agree. The US will put up a fight to prevent losing 20%+ GDP. However a serious secession effort would likely extract certain benefits. This has happened in Quebec.
I suggested you'd have to take OR and WA with you, but I think leaving the rest means they would have an even harder time becoming a progressive democratic republic again.
I don’t understand why we can’t just demand Gavin close our borders now. The terrorist has already attacked our water supply and by extension the nation’s food supply. This is a state of emergency.
......either to form a new independent superpower with Sacramento, California as capital or join Canada as new Canadian provinces but still having a president and vice president on the American side to compliment Canada's prime minister and deputy prime minister.
All of the blue states (California, Oregon, Washington, Vermont, Maine, Connecticut, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Delaware, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Massachusetts, Colorado, Illinois, Michigan and Hawaii) should secede en masse.....
I've been arguing for a while that the best way to resist the authoritarian takeover being executed by Trump is for the blue states to secede. This is a great development.
No state can leave the union except via constitutional amendment, which requires 2/3 vote from 3/4 of states. That's never gonna happen. We couldn't even get the Equal Rights Amendment passed.
Yes, correct. They cannot leave constitutionally, but they can still leave. They can give two middle fingers, turn their backs, say "Nope" and just separate. CA and any other state does not require permission, any more than an abused spouse needs their abusive spouse's permission to leave.
But will SCOTUS allow it in White vs Texas SCOTUS ruled no state has right to secede from the Union and Force Texas back in Texas was under martial law for 15 years till current constitution was ratified by Congress
Most don't know this actual history it's forgotten because Texas was the only state not to sign the letter stating it would never secede again. But Trump would attempt martial law to control California
Civil disobedience is when the threat of being penalized by an unjust law is present and you defy the law anyway. It’s not when you make a threat to defy the law and they say they’ll enforce it so you go home quietly. Let him attempt martial law all he wants, just keep resisting.
Don’t fall for what?! 😂 idgaf who promotes the idea, does it make the US weaker? Why would I care if I am not even gonna be there?
I didn’t vote for a dictator, not my country, not my problem. Would be awesome. Enjoy the red hats.
Don’t fall for disunity and hate some governments are peddling.
Splitting up countries piecemeal leads to overall global instability. Which makes it easier for bad actors to do bad things.
“Not my country not my problem” is the same thing “red hats” say about Ukraine.
I’m in CA and I would seriously consider it. We’ve had the 5th largest economy in the world for 7 years. Maybe WA and OR will want to join us? We could be true allies of Canada. Most red states loathe us anyway so they would probably be happy. A mutual break up 🤗
California being such a populous state gets screwed in federal representation ; we have around 68 times the population of Wyoming but also two senators. And Trump pulling his BS about "turning on the water" and threatening federal aid after the wildfires; I think this will get enough signatures.
What short memories we have here. Does no one remember this same op in 2016? A Russian op to push this very thing. Stop it, people. We are not seceding.
Trump and his thugs aren’t going to help blue states. It’s time to stop sending Federal monies to the government on the basis that their states will need it with the destruction of FEMA in particular. Secede if they need to.
California, Oregon, Washington, New York, New Jersey, New Mexico, Colorado, Massachusetts, Vermont, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island, Delaware, Connecticut, Illinois and Hawaii should secede together en masse to form a new democratic nation with Sacramento, CA as capital.....
This is fun to imagine but not possible. Sharon McMahon has a highlight on her Instagram explaining this due to multiple instances of Texans talking about secession. Go check it out @SharonSaysSo.
Why don't we do real things, instead of fake things that can't be done. For example, Puerto Rico and Washington DC could try to be states. Blue states could band together to have their own free health insurance and science support.
States can't secede. I hope this is a joke. We actually fraught a long bloody war over this in the 1880s. It is not constitutional for states to leave, there is no process to do it.
I think all blue states should do this and consider seceding. We aren’t allowed to secede from the U.S. but if we aren’t the same country anymore, we don’t have to stay. If he can ignore the constitution and judges, so can we.
The fantasy of petulant children. It’s already a hell of unaffordable housing and homelessness run by dumb dumbs who keep making it worse. Only the privileged think California is functional. For the working class it’s no less a slog than Alabama.
I don’t care if you’re Canadian. Pretending California is better because some macro statistic says the working class as a whole may be marginally better off by a limited number of easily quantifiable factors is bad for democracy. Settling for the velvet clad iron fist is bad for democracy.
I now see this is more complicated than it first appears but you never know what can happen. Covid19, and the current USA also seem very unlikely so add it to my bingo card.
The only way this would work is if all the blue states joined together and become a separate country. It’s the military I’m worried about. We are living in precarious times and we’d need a large military to protect us.
This plays into exactly what they want us to do. We divide the states, then it’s open season on the states that are no longer a part of the Union. This admin would gladly “take” California’s resources and finances.
“If proponents can gather signatures from 546,651 registered voters by July 22, Californians will see the question: "Should California leave the United States and become a free and independent country?" on the 2028 ballot.”
Straightforward, sure. But for things like this, you need your wording to be as neutral as possible, or you open yourself up to challenges on the grounds of biased language.
Yes. And the MAGAts have been talking about a national divorce for years. I’m tired of this abusive relationship. If our leaders refuse to take this on, we are all on our own anyways. I’m not going to let Putin take my home. He destroys California, he has the entire country. We lock it up NOW.

There are lots of pros and cons.

Create so much internal dissention in the US, that the country fractures
The confederate apes need us.
We do not need them.
Never have.
Time to seriously consider a divorce.
Before we are all dragged into this fascist nightmare.
I was born and raised there.
I could easily move back, if Trumpeeto and Musk smash democracy.

A better approach is to make California’s politicians work for the people, not just the economy. For workers, the state is a miserable place to live.
If they won’t learn, show them.
California could be a beacon of hope, but its leaders are failing the people.

RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA
And put a chokehold on red interior states’ trade.
Suffocate them.
Destroy their economies.
It worked before.
It's the same crock.
And, surprise surprise, both were Republicans before this particular grift.

There are measurable outcomes. Poverty rates, maternal & infant mortality, life expectancy, literacy, crime, etc.
Alabama is 48th worse in the union. California is 15th.

Only if we join Canada.
Otherwise The FELON could invade CA with our military just like Putin and make it Trumpifornia.
I wish I was just joking. But anything is possible.
If the ballot doesn't have that wording on it, no problem.
Not trying to spread anything. This is just my shaky memory of the story.
So not that different.
