I’m always keen to see new archetypes in the meta. It seems like we’ve been recycling the same strategies with different staples. Tech from decks like multicolour legends was so cool. Competitive formats feels less appealing if you have to play certain cards.

It has been a blast to play Standard just hard to find people to play! Most people just see it to be competitive but it can be played for fun with some really crazy fun decks!

I get the impulse to remove Rage, but there are already replacements like Dreadmaw’s Ire that would cause the same situations. I find Manifold Mouse to be the most frustrating part of the equation and certainly the biggest source of non games.

I do think Beans are oppressively strong as well but there are a number of cards I feel that way about. Like I think This Town is as strong or stronger when doing its thing.

Yeah, as I mentioned in the video I think pixie/bounce decks are likely the next-best-thing that might need some kind of hit as well.

I think Standard could strongly benefit from a planned banning system where 1-2 cards get banned every quarter regardless of format health. Especially with a six set/year three year format threatening to make things stale. Some people would hate it, but I would welcome a quarterly tune up.

I agree with your points, but I think outside competitive, cost and the choice to make UB standard legal is what will hurt the format the most. I have no plans to buy any FF packs because of the price tag. And my playgroup is the same. We'll pick up a couple singles for commander, but that's it.

posting my thoughts b4 watching to see if we agree:

Standard is a format where linear progress of the mana curve should be emphasized, and too many cards in the format "cheat" on mana by creating an imbalance in how 1-2 mana cards should operate

Monstrous Rage being banned in Alchemy has made for a much more enjoyable format, along with the 2 year card pool & some of the Alchemy "build around" cards which, unlike early Alchemy, have not been super busted

Re: Town - I said maybe something needs to be banned from the pixie style decks as well, but that's less clear. It's also possible that removing the two (much more obvious and much more longstanding) pillars of rage and beanstalk opens up the format for other decks that are competitive with bounce

Seriously, though. I used to be pissed when playing against monored aggro, probably because it wasn't like today where early removal is considered a must have. So playing against an opponent like that kinda ruined your fun because even meta decks didn't rely that much on control.

I appreciate your thoughts on the state of things! I have always been enamored with standard as a functional valve in what degeneracy trickles into eternal formats. I think more focused testing like the Future Future League would be healthier in the contemporary era of effect-rich card design.

If the ultimate goal is to make a deeper, more playable standard format with the new rotation cycle, the deeper testing would probably catch things like the core Mouse package. Each of the three has great multi-functionality that toning down the design on any single one wouldn't break entirely.
