What’s funny is that there’s some older boktai staff (Hinino, JNTHED) that were told of the fangame in passing over the years and their general response was something along the lines of “oh that’s interesting/cute” so I wouldn’t be surprised if Konami also knows and is being chill about it.

How much does this rely on you having played official boktai before? Would it be fine for someone totally unfamiliar to play it or would things go over my head

Not much! The plot is entirely self contained and most of the cast is ocs, but taking place in the same world it’s good to at least have a “read the wikipedia page” level of understanding the other games if you got time.
