I don't get that comparison. Linux is a fairly good OS with fairly poor third party support. Windows is a fairly poor OS with good third party support. Mac is an ok OS with OK third party support - ThreadSky

I use Windows most of the time, and then Linux via WSL for when I want to do something that is better supported on Linux than on Windows.
I was actually trying to use a software library once. When I ran it on Windows I had issues. Those issues disappeaed when I switched to using WSL for that lib.

I think they're referring to things like Photoshop, MS Office, etc. Support from applications, not for the OS itself.

Yeah especially with Windows 11 you can see how so many features, settings panels and UI are just essentially three layers of paint on XP

I have absolutely no desire to fight Linux for device driver compatibility though. No time or energy for that these days!

It’s a really low-friction complaint. Windows for all its flaws is very plug-and-play. Basically just not worth the effort at the moment to switch!

I’m more than happy messing about with Linux boxes for fun tho, got a local Minecraft server running as well as a few other ongoing projects here.

I would say Linux in 2025 has great 3rd party support with software repositories, documentation and increasingly better and currently good hardware support. If we are talking about program vendors offering poor linux support then we should specify who - as this is not a fault of Linux.

In the engineering world (not SW engineering but ME,EE, etc) there are unfortunately many programs that are Windows only. For a daily driver I agree with you though. Libre Office is ok. As much as I dislike Google, Google docs works for a lot of things.

Not really. I recently moved all my stuff to Ubuntu. I'm a photographer, and I depend on specific software. Adobe is putting me in a difficult situation with the license cost, and to be honest, LR is a f hog.

There are numerous FOSS creative apps. Are they as developed as Adobe? Sometimes. They're not as glitzy, but can do any job if you have the skills from the days before CC. Not as much machine learning tools.

@krita.org is a solid PS replacement, and inkscape is a good stand-in for Illustrator.

I'll stan Krita all day especially with it's superior to photoshop blending modes (the text tool really sucks though), it's what I do nearly all my painting in. Inkscape though is sadly no replacement for illustrator. It keeps getting better but it's not there yet.

Kritas blending modes are light-years ahead of any other app I've used.

Inkscape is good, but both it and Krita really need work on text. That comes down to the SVG standard though. Krita now supports manually editing SVG code for more options.

Even though I use it for image editing, I can fully appreciate the brushes. I use all kinds of brushes for masking and selectively applying effect masks and layers. Even non-painters can get a lot out of it.

Not to mention Krita on Linux supports my old Intuos 3 better than PS on Win ever did.

It's more that Linux is an excellent server OS and a mediocre desktop OS. I honestly am mostly fine with just a web browser and terminal client, and used Linux for years at work, but I got tired of losing half a day when an update broke my X server. At a certain point, macs are a good compromise
