Bird droppings are everywhere. It would be very easy to come in contact with traces of them while walking without even being aware of it.
Would strongly recommend leaving shoes outdoors, or using a bleach bath.
Home-made bleach
The important things to remember are that shoes should be cleaned first, sole area should have contact with dilute bleach solution for 10 minutes, & diluted bleach should be changed for fresh solution at least every 24 hours.
