In the article, they're saying that flu cases and hospitalizations are on track to hit a 30-year high. I don't know if deaths will follow, but this is apparently is an unusually bad year for flu.

During the COVID pandemic, it was typical for mortality stats to lag far behind cases and hosp.

Unfortunately, we don't have a clear view on either the pathology or the epidemiology. Far too often, wintertime "flu" is not actually influenza, and when it is, what variant? Some of these deaths may easily be attributed to other viral diseases.
