AVIF is the AV1 video format, repackaged as an animation. Video formats are more efficient for multiple frames than GIF because they predict the contents of a frame from other frames, saving a lot of data. GIF cannot do this nearly as effectively, so you can get much more quality in 10MB with AVIF.
also, can we just do something about all the scammers, and crashes, audio quality, latency issues, maybe work on improving our noise reduction?
i get that one person in this thread is thrilled, im happy someone can use this, so its not totally useless, but seriously. dont you have bigger fish to fry
Pretty sure if they worked on noise reduction (krisp works really well in my experience) some person in the comments would say 'can we just do something about the scammers, crashes, audio, latency and maybe work on avif support'
why do we need a new format that is essentially a gif? or a webm?
why do people keep seeming to think i want a .jfif all of a sudden? who asked for that? whats wrong with jpegs?
my pc doesnt even really know what a .jifif is, and really why should it? wth was wrong with .jpeg, .png, or whatever?
i feel that comment was just supposed to antagonize, mostly, cus i think its clear from my comment that i dont understand the difference and why the new formats are needed?
so... idk what you want from me?
i did phrase my comment as a question, rather than answering a question with a question (which implies you dont know either, but are trying to appear that you do)
how about someone answer my question and tell my why the change is necessary? and if not, kindly go away and allow me my questions?
i am earnestly reading this, since you were nice enough to find me seemingly real info ^_^ (thank you for answering me instead of mindlessly throwing shade)
ohhh? royalty free? i wasnt aware that copywrite had anything to do with specific format? i've never paid for a jpeg in my life? and i've never been paid for one... im gonna look now cus im fuckin curious about THAT, but... who is getting royalties for jpegs, that couldnt be applied to jfif?
The impression I got is there will be new formats that compete with AVIF; they may even outperform it. But using them would require paying royalties to the devs who made those codecs, so they will be exclusive to premium products and platforms, I assume.
It's an image format that's essentially an AV1 video that may be one or more frames repackaged as an image or animation. This is far more efficient than a regular GIF - you can easily compress an entire movie to a Discord-sized AVIF.
If you're interested in trying AVIF on Discord, our website is capable of compressing any image or GIF into an AVIF at a target size, including 10 MiB for Discord.
I low key almost don't want that. Because without it, it makes for great little Discord gimmicks.
Since Discord doesn't support APNG properly just yet. You can show a different image on Discord, then whats seen in a browser. Which can either be for a light joke or fun puzzle
