40 years ago, the Rainbow Warrior took part in a historic event on the Marshall Islands - a massive relocation effort to help evacuate the people of Rongelap to Mejatto due to decades of US government nuclear weapons testing.

This was what made me join Greenpeace back then - actually doing something instead of just protesting. Things didn't, unfortunately, continue in that way; protest very much outweighed action. I finally gave up on Greenpeace a few years ago when their Facebook presence became very childish.

I've gone back to tentative support, but wish they could be more like the organisation I joined back in those heady days of more action, less protest.

They say we rescued them from a contaminated Rongelap, but the reality is that they rescued themselves - the Marshallese are the strong and brave people who took their future into their own hands and continue to do so.
We cannot relocate the world — it is only through standing and acting together that we will make the needed difference that saves us all. In the fight for justice, our voices will not be silenced.
