Charles Darwin published his book Descent of Man #OnThisDay in 1871. In it he wrote: "It has often been asserted that man’s origin can never be known, but ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge."

And 100 years later (more or less) Elaine Morgan published "Descent of Woman". Elaine criticised the "Man the Mighty Hunter" obsession that held sway in anthropology for over a century. Many (e.g. Lieberman et al) still promote it today.

I find the contemporary “Darwin as a Monkey” art pieces so funny. Sure, they were satirical and thinly veiled mockery, but the fact that they look oddly plausible (like his head really could fit on there) kind of illustrates the point of “The Descent of Man”.
