FWIW, a friend formerly of Midwest Bearfest, says that in an early iteration of TBRU, there were some bisexual bear men who attended and brought their *wives*, several of whom behaved as if it was a bisexual swingers party, which did not go over well with most attendees.

A rule was added to exclude women from attending for that reason. When the question arose as to whether or not trans men could attend, they modified the language to ensure that trans men were welcome. The "male presenting" phrase was only part of that.

The implication that non-binary people are excluded does need to be clarified. Personally, I don't have an issue with NB folks, but I don't know the position of the Dallas Bears. But my understanding is that this was not an attempt to exclude them.

I'm not trans so I have no idea how this would be perceived by a trans person.

I can say it seemed welcoming as it literally says trans men are welcome.

It is saying that women aren't welcome without saying "no women".

My friends (who are nonbinary , trans and queer ) stated this made them feel uncomfortable and felt this was an unnecessary statement. Male presenting is a vague subjective term that has been used to discriminate trans folx against those that don’t act a certain way.

Not to discount your friends feelings on the matter, but a larger sample size would be required befor I could come to a conclusion.

Its neither here nor there but the bear community is literally a celebration of secondary male sexual traits.

The San Diego Bears are inclusive and respectful of Trans guys. I’m a Cub in that group; transitioned already. During the process, I was accepted. You have some cis gender Bears that aren’t into making out w/Trans guys, but they are still respectful. That’s important. Folks like what they like.
