I know the financial pain is hard, but once that funding is gone I wonder if the freedom is worth it.

Like, if I won the lottery I'd live differently. Without fed requirements, does the theater keep going or, free, do they take things to the next level.

I have a feeling there are going to be a lot of private donations coming in as a result of this story and maybe more impetus to take it to the next level as well.

I just keep thinking about Reagan's move-from-government-to-charity philosophy. Which lead to inferior services and strings, like sitting through church to get a soup kitchen meal.

NPR's ads don't enamor me, but I like the FU opportunity is might afford.

I work with a mutual aid group that makes meals- no church involved- and one advantage is we do a much better job cheaper than the groups contracted by the city, probably because nobody is getting paid. We also get to be as 'political' as we want.

I'm also inspired by old school groups like Lion's Club. These are definitely not hippy libs and yet they come to my school every year and do extensive eye exams that reveal several needs each time they come. Tocqueville noted such organizations were the backbone of our nation's success.

My grandparents were very involved in the Lion's Club and other local social groups, and I think their lives were richer as a result.

I worry about volunteers as the last line of defense, in part because I give money (not enough) and not time (I'm a teacher, so I spend my day giving, but volunteering is another level of angels).

But there are a number of orgs around me that do it well. So, inspired. I'd like to believe.
