Giving mech pilots an irrational, personifying love of their mechs. That way when they're crumpled at handlers feet tearfully apologizing for letting their giant robot girlfriend suffer battle damage we'll know she means it

When the mechanics tease her about how much she loves it and so she should kiss it, she does so with such eagerness that half the mechanics pull out their datapads to record it for later, all while she ignores them and just messily runs her lips and tongue over the metal finger of her machine.
Makeup stains all over the saluting pilot as her handler walks into the hangar and looks at her and then her machine with a face that is completely unreadable
Earns the pilot plenty of leering stares and piles of gifted makeup products~
Handler only lets it happen because she knows it's good motivation to let the pilot have a "date" with the mech every so often (and better punishment when the date privileges are taken away)
So this is why the advancement of mechadolls is so important. Why shouldn't android little girls be there to unleash violence, idoltry from civilians and non-pilots, and completely normal love from pilots themselves.
Handler making her count defeats and mistakes with painted marks rather than kills. Making the pilot really feel the shame of it, knowing that she's defacing her beloved with every foot she puts wrong
Making me think of also having them reversed, each rebel victory that's already on a reclaimed Mech must be "undone" before the scar will be allowed to heal.
A tally mark of what is needed before you even get to ground zero, and any defeats only add to the debt you already have to repay.
"You are below worthless, you are a millstone around the neck of the Empire. Until you repay the pain and trouble you have caused me, your reward will be delayed. You have been a Bad Girl, but once you remove all of those ugly marks then you will know you are now a Good Girl and I can love you."
Just the idea, of a Hound having that kind of visible metric, and the added incentive to destroy. Especially resounding victories remove two marks, especially bad defeats place two more.
All the while, the Hound is going more and more *feral* the close it gets to being "cleansed" and "purified."
To have washed away all of its victories and contribution to the rebel cause in the blood and oil of the Empire's foes.
And then, it gets a shiny new collar and muzzle to show that it has earned its place now. It gets to proudly receive the tattoos and markings of being a proper Hound.
mmm Upgrading the mech to a new one could lead to destabilization...maybe assigning an AI to each pilot, one that can be transplanted to new mechs is the answer...much to ponder.
I'd wager the first record of this pilot behavior was when someone "transferred" an engineer to the pilot program. It's what happens when handlers catch you flirting with the AI core and [ data expunged ]
"It's... it is the least it can do for them taking such good care of my mech. They undwrstand thr
en, just how devoted it is. Hoe it feels so good. Each heavy motion."
The chemical cocktails and conditioning are slipped into regulation meals and therapy sessions. A pilot won't actually know if they're in the program or just like their mech.
But word on the net is that the first definitive sign is the installation of an extra chair in the corner of the repair bay.

As for the mechanics, that file has made the rounds countless times by now

(Its legs shift awkardly, thinking about how much it masturbates and grinds against the seat in the mech cockpit).

(Especially with a toy inside).
