Religious people are naturally gullible. They take things on faith with no evidence required.

This makes them a sitting duck for politicians who convince them that Jesus wants them to do this or that.

I've not read the article, so I might be repeating a point already therein. Remember the reason Kennedy had to do that was the evangelical wing was terrified that he was a Papist and would be beholden to the Vatican. He wasn't and he didn't. Same forces today though are at work.
